Hello, community! One of the most profitable methods of sending traffic to gambling today is through app-based funnels. However, these schemes are now facing increasing challenges. And we’re not just talking about random app bans — regulatory changes are also making things trickier.
One such change is the requirement to obtain Trader Status in the AppStore to run app campaigns in Europe. Before we dive in, check out our recent piece on how gambling funnels via apps work — it’s a must-read!
Why Trader Status in the AppStore Matters Now
As you may know, there have been frequent legal changes in the EU lately. While these are positioned as anti-monopoly or anti-terrorist policies, they often feel like anti-affiliate measures. But we’re adaptable — we’ve weathered worse storms.
Since February 17 of this year, the EU has implemented new regulations regarding the distribution of mobile apps and games on digital platforms. This is part of the Digital Services Act (DSA). So what’s it all about?
The law aims to make the digital marketplace safer and more transparent. It’s enforced through the following measures:
- Platforms must disclose how their algorithms work.
- Moderation of digital content must be improved.
- Stricter regulation of targeted advertising, and more.
These are major changes, especially if you’re actively running app-based campaigns in Europe. We recommend reviewing every part of this law yourself.
For now, we’ll focus on Article 30 — the part most relevant to affiliates like us.
What’s in Article 30 of the DSA?
Article 30 of the Digital Services Act requires platforms to collect full information about the developer or retailer monetizing through in-app purchases.
This includes public disclosure of the developer’s contact info on the app’s page.
Apps that don’t comply with the new requirements must be removed — but this only applies to EU regions. If your traffic is coming from elsewhere, these rules won’t affect you.
But if you’re targeting Europe, gone are the days of uploading “incognito” apps. Now, you must confirm Trader Status and agree to DSA terms.
Under the law, both individuals and companies qualify as traders if they profit from app distribution — particularly via in-app purchases. These features are common in gambling and dating apps alike.
How to Verify Trader Status
The verification process depends on which digital platform you’re using. The rules apply to the AppStore, Google Play, and even the Microsoft Store.
Google warned partners about this transition early on and has long encouraged devs to complete their developer profile.
Verification in the AppStore
In the AppStore, you can update your information in the “Business” section under “Agreements” in the “Compliance” tab. If your app has paid features, select the trader account option.
Then you’ll need to link your email and phone number, and verify them via two-factor authentication. If you’re a legal entity, you must also provide your company name, legal address, and DUNS number.
You must agree to follow EU law. This information will be visible on every app you publish, keeping you compliant and avoiding EU market bans.
If your apps don’t include paid features, choose the non-trader account option.
Conclusion
It’s a bit disheartening to see our favorite niche becoming so bureaucratic — from new META rules to app restrictions. Who knows what comes next? But at the end of the day, it’s all about the profit.
What’s your take? Did you manage to verify Trader Status in time — or did all your apps get nuked in the EU on February 17? Share your story in our Telegram community, where we always discuss the latest affiliate news!
Respectfully yours, your Geek!
