Is Threads Adding Targeted Ads Now?

Hello, community! It’s always great when new traffic sources appear — especially when they come from mobile apps with millions of users that you can access through just one ad account. And today’s article is exactly about that.

Before we begin, remember we already covered the plans to launch ads in Threads. But today we’ve got something fresher to share with you!

Threads Ads Testing Rumors

Threads didn’t show a single ad for a long time after launch. META focused on gaining as many users as possible — especially by pulling people from Twitter, which at that time officially became X.

And although there were no ads at first, everyone — from affiliates to regular Instagram and Facebook users — knew it wouldn’t last. Eventually, Threads would get the same targeted ads as every other META product.

And that’s exactly what happened. Back in January, rumors began that META was testing ads in partnership with a few big brands. These were later confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

Official Threads Ads Launch

On April 23, META officially announced that ads would soon appear in users’ Threads feeds. If you’re not seeing them yet — that’s okay. The rollout is gradual and goes market by market. This gives META a chance to:

  1. Carefully track how ads are received in each region
  2. Optimize the tools on the fly for maximum performance before going fully global

Note: depending on when you’re reading this, Threads ads may already be live in your region. You can always check current GEO availability via META’s help center.

According to Mosseri, the focus will be on creating a “quality personal experience” for users. In short: people will see ads that are tailored to their specific interests.

In other words — this is classic targeted advertising, just like on Instagram and Facebook. Now, Threads becomes another potential placement. You might already have access depending on your country.

How to Run Ads in Threads

Threads will be automatically included as a placement if you’re running traffic via Advantage+ or Manual Placements. You can also manually disable Threads by unchecking it in your ad settings.

Advertisers will also be able to control ad placement near sensitive content. While this isn’t a big deal for affiliates, it matters for brands that want to avoid being shown next to things like graphic scenes, trauma, or videos of destruction in Ukraine caused by russians.

So advertisers will be able to choose from three content filter options:

Filter DescriptionFilter Name
Maximum reach with no restrictions. Ads may appear next to any content that follows META’s monetization policy.“Expanded”
Restricts very sensitive content. Medium reach.“Moderate”
Filters out broader sensitive content. Lowest reach.“Limited”

Keep this in mind if you’re working with a limited budget. You’ll definitely find a filter level that helps you squeeze the most profit out of your spend.

How Threads Ads Will Look

Threads ads will have a native look and feel. They’ll blend in like regular posts, with only a small “Sponsored” label in the corner. That means you’ll be free to experiment with creatives — lots of room for testing.

Visually, it’ll be very similar to how ads appear on X (formerly Twitter):

Also worth noting: on X, ads appear not just in the feed but in the comments too. So it’s very likely Threads will do the same.

Conclusion

We don’t yet have success cases of traffic arbitrage in Threads — no surprise there, the format is still very new. And those already profiting probably won’t reveal anything just yet.

However, major ad agency GroupM has already shown support for Threads ads. And if the platform is catching the eye of big brands — this could be a sign that it’s a promising new traffic source.
