What is a shadow ban on TikTok and how can you recover from it?

Hello, community! TikTok is one of the key traffic sources for the modern affiliate. This is especially true for the part of the industry that focuses specifically on free traffic. Thanks to the algorithms, you can very quickly tap into a massive chunk of traffic and generate profit.

However, these algorithms also have a downside. Namely, the possibility of getting not just an obvious page suspension, but a more insidious and less visible shadowban that can ruin all your work.

Today, we are taking a closer look at the reasons behind a shadowban and what it actually is. But before that, we would like to remind you that we have already written about how to stay at the top of TikTok in 2025. Definitely worth checking out!

What is a shadowban on TikTok?

Unlike a traditional suspension, a shadowban is impossible to see directly. That is because it does not restrict the user from using the platform’s tools in any visible way. And that is exactly what makes this phenomenon especially painful.

Meme about a TikTok shadowban

From a technical point of view, a shadowban is a TikTok marker used to label accounts with a low level of trust or a high-risk profile. This can happen in the following cases:

  • Suspicious activity. For example, when a user has just registered and immediately starts publishing a huge number of posts every hour.
  • Using someone else’s content. This is also a red flag in TikTok’s eyes. Of course, high-quality unique content tools can partially help bypass automatic checks. At the same time, there is always a risk that other users will report the post. The platform may also impose sanctions for low-quality content.
  • Spam. This can be part of suspicious activity. Because you can spam with publications as well. But it can also show up in endless messages to other users. Especially if those messages contain obvious advertising.
  • Automation and fake boosting. TikTok reacts very negatively to any attempts to automate the process of running pages on the platform. Also, if you decide to artificially boost followers — most of whom will likely be bots — that can also lead to sanctions.
  • Violating platform rules. For some major violations, the account will simply be suspended. But for smaller ones, you can end up with a shadowban.

Given how unclear this phenomenon is by nature, creators may sometimes not even realize they are shadowbanned at all. So for this kind of situation, it is useful to have something like a checklist that lets you verify whether there are problems with your account. Let’s move on to that.

How can you tell if you are shadowbanned?

There are several of the most obvious factors that may point to a shadowban:

  1. A drop in views and reactions. If your videos used to get around 50k views but suddenly can barely reach even 10k, that is a sign that something is wrong. And it is very possible that this is the result of hidden sanctions.
  2. Your videos are no longer reaching recommendations. To check this, you just need to look at analytics and see where your views are coming from. If it is only direct visits or followers, and there are almost no visits from the “For You” page, that is another unpleasant signal.
  3. Your videos have started taking a long time to pass moderation, or they are no longer being approved at all. This may happen because of serious violations, but it can also be a result of a shadowban.

So the main sign that an account has a shadowban is a drop in views. However, you should also understand that view counts can decrease because of content quality and other factors. But if you see a sudden decline in stats without any obvious reason, then there is a high probability that it is the result of sanctions.

How long can a shadowban last?

The reasons that led to sanctions being imposed on your account may affect how long those sanctions will continue to be felt.

In cases involving low-quality content — such as low-resolution videos or simply the use of irrelevant hashtags — a shadowban may last only a few days. For fake boosting, automation, or using someone else’s content, it can last more than two weeks. And for repeated violations, it can become almost permanent — or at least so long that no sane person would wait it out and would simply create a new account instead.

How to get rid of a shadowban?

There are certain methods that can help get rid of a shadowban in some situations. Of course, this only applies if it was not imposed because of systematic violations. The basic set of recommendations looks like this:

  1. Analyze your most recently posted content to try to find the video that triggered the sanctions. Deleting it may improve the condition of your account.
  2. Take a pause. Do not post anything for a few days. Then check whether the situation has improved.
  3. If this is your main account and you are absolutely sure you did nothing prohibited, contact support. Of course, they are unlikely to directly tell you whether your account is shadowbanned. But “magically,” after such communication, view stats often return to their previous levels.

Some publications also note that sometimes a shadowban may be tied to the device rather than the account itself. In that case, clearing the cache and restarting the TikTok app may help.

Conclusion

Of course, low views are very often explained away as a shadowban. But that is easy to understand: because of the lack of transparency in how this algorithm works, it is never fully clear where the result is caused by sanctions and where views are missing for other reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shadowban on TikTok?

A shadowban is a hidden restriction from TikTok that cannot be seen directly. The account is not suspended, and the user can still use all platform features, but the algorithms significantly reduce the reach of its content. This usually happens when the system considers the account risky or believes it has violated certain rules.

How can you tell if an account has been shadowbanned?

Most often, it is signaled by a sharp drop in views and interactions on videos. Videos may also stop appearing in recommendations — for example, when most views come only from followers or direct visits. Another signal may be longer moderation times or situations where videos stop being approved altogether.

What should you do if your account gets shadowbanned?

First of all, you should analyze your recent posts and remove any content that may have violated the rules. It is also useful to pause posting for a few days and see whether the stats recover. If it is your main account and you are sure you did not break any rules, you can contact support. In some cases, clearing the cache and restarting the app may also help.
