The sales funnel in traffic arbitrage: what is it and how does it work?

Hello, community! To get the desired conversion, affiliates almost have to lead the consumer by the hand toward completing the target action. This entire path is called a sales funnel. What it looks like and what it should be — we explain in today’s review.

Before we begin, let us remind you that we have already covered gamification in marketing. We recommend checking it out!

What Is a Sales Funnel?

A sales funnel is something like a plan for what the customer journey should look like, from first learning about the product to the actual purchase. Sometimes it can be visualized, but in affiliate marketing, people do not usually overthink this. Mostly because visualization is needed when working with teams

The purpose of building a funnel is quite simple: to understand in advance how the customer may behave within our funnel. This makes it easier to forecast potential ROI and is very helpful when further optimizing an ad campaign.

Sales funnels always exist in affiliate marketing. Although, in fact, this term came to us from classic marketing. And while in classic marketing funnels are extremely large-scale and include many different scenarios, a typical funnel in affiliate marketing is much more concise. But we will get to that a little later.

What Does a Classic Sales Funnel Look Like?

Let’s move closer to practice. There is a classic structure of the most basic sales funnel:

  1. Awareness. The user sees our ad.
  2. Interest. This appears when the customer clicks on the ad.
  3. Desire to buy. This is when the user adds the product to the cart.
  4. Target action. The user completes the payment.

This is a typical model called AIDA. It is an abbreviation for attention, interest, desire, and action. In other words, each stage of the funnel.

Although the plan is very simple, certain difficulties may arise at each of these stages. That is why understanding the funnel helps optimize ad campaigns better and get more conversions.

How Does a Marketing Funnel Differ from an Affiliate Marketing Funnel?

A sales funnel in affiliate marketing is very similar to a marketing funnel, but only in terms of how it looks. In other words, it follows the AIDA principle.

If we look deeper, we can see a significant difference in approaches. In marketing, entire departments work on funnels. This is not just about creating the plan itself, but also about working on each stage of the funnel.

There are customer communication departments, sales managers, and so on. In fact, separate groups of specialists are responsible for each individual stage of the funnel. The goal is not only to get a conversion, but also to build a strong brand image.

The funnel makes it possible not only to optimize the ad campaign itself. In large teams, it is also a way to identify which department is underperforming. Accordingly, this becomes a matter of optimizing the work of the entire company. And this makes the funnel an even more necessary tool.

In affiliate marketing, this does not make much sense. The main focus is specifically on getting the conversion. And to some extent, this gives more freedom. After all, it creates many opportunities.

However, there is also another side to this. Sometimes affiliates resort to not very honest methods to push the user toward conversion. In such cases, there is a risk of crossing the thin line where the ad campaign starts violating the rules of the advertising platform. And that can put your entire campaign at risk.

Conclusion

A sales funnel is not just a theoretical model, but a practical tool that helps understand user behavior and find weak points in the funnel. It is the analysis of each stage that makes it possible to optimize ad campaigns more effectively, reduce traffic losses, and increase conversion.

At the same time, it is important to remember that even in the pursuit of results, you must follow the rules of advertising platforms. After all, stable campaign performance and long-term profit are always more valuable than short-term success.
