Hello, community! It’s a bit hard to imagine, but some of our readers may not even remember the era of mobile WAP internet. Back then, accessing the internet from a mobile phone (not even a smartphone) required half a day to configure your device.
About 15 years ago, a vertical called WapClick emerged. Thanks to its ability to adapt to modern market realities, this niche is still active today with many offers available. If you’re not yet familiar with this niche, its benefits, or whether it’s worth your attention—this review is for you!
We also remind you that we regularly review other, somewhat forgotten niches. For instance, we recently discussed what sweepstakes are and whether they remain relevant in 2024. We recommend checking it out!
What is a WapClick offer?
WapClick works as follows: traffic is offered a subscription, for example, to weather forecasts. If the user agrees, a certain amount of money is deducted from their account. These subscription services are the advertisers who form the offers.
Conversions happen in the following way:
- The lead lands on a page explaining the subscription terms and benefits;
- The lead agrees and activates the subscription through a phone call, SMS, or simply by following a link;
- If the lead has sufficient balance, the subscription payment is processed, and you receive your commission.
Money will continue to be deducted for the duration of the subscription. If the user is inattentive or genuinely interested, you could earn stable passive income—though this is an ideal scenario.
Besides weather, there are many other categories: from horoscopes to adult content. This leads to the first advantage of this vertical—the ability to tailor offers to different target audiences.
Varieties of WapClick
WapClick itself can be divided into two key categories based on the technologies used for conversions. There are WapClick offers that operate using:
- Direct billing
- SMS billing, Click2SMS
With direct billing, conversion occurs only when the user interacts with the offer via 3G, 4G, or 5G networks. SMS billing does not have these restrictions.
Direct billing can also be subdivided into two types depending on the conversion speed. These are:
- One-click conversion, where the user subscribes with a single click;
- Two-click conversion, where the user is redirected to another page, potentially confirming that the conversion is intentional for both the affiliate and the user.
The main advantage of direct billing offers is the simplicity of obtaining conversions. However, SMS billing is even more complex because it requires the user to leave their mobile number on the landing page. Then:
- The user receives an SMS with subscription details and must respond (e.g., “Yes” or “No”) to confirm the subscription. This is the Mobile Originated (MO) model;
- The user receives an SMS with a PIN code, which they must enter on the landing page. This is the Mobile Terminated (MT) model.
It’s worth noting that most WapClick offers lack real value. Many affiliates rely on impulsive clicks or unintentional actions.
Click2SMS, however, is designed to eliminate random conversions, making it harder to find leads who will intentionally subscribe to paid services. Nonetheless, this is more of a reflection than comprehensive analytics.
Pros and Cons of WapClick
Now that we’ve touched on the technical aspects, let’s discuss the advantages of such offers:
- Low competition. Most affiliates prefer more stable verticals, such as iGaming;
- Simple funnels and setup for ad campaigns. For most offers, you don’t need tools like cloaking;
- Plenty of offers in partner networks to experiment with various GEOs and operators.
However, there are drawbacks:
- Most advertisers are willing to pay only $1–$3 per lead, sometimes even less;
- Despite a variety of GEOs, most offers are limited to Tier-2 and Tier-3 countries;
- Targeting is challenging because you need to consider the user’s connection type and even their cellular operator.
In short, this is not a walk in the park. However, the opportunity to carve out your niche and earn a substantial profit is very real—provided you calculate your potential ROI accurately before starting.
What sources are suitable for WapClick?
Generally, traffic for this vertical can come from almost any source. However, some are more rational to use, such as:
- Contextual advertising. Most offers are white-hat, so setting up campaigns should be straightforward;
- Mobile display banners, which can appear on websites or within mobile apps;
- In-app advertising, displayed exclusively in mobile games and applications;
- Push traffic, which is relatively inexpensive and fits well with this niche;
- Social media, focusing more on free traffic rather than targeted ads, as profitability can be challenging.
Considering the low commissions, focusing on free traffic might not be a bad idea. However, to achieve significant profit, you’ll need to generate as much traffic as possible.
Conclusion
WapClick is a somewhat archaic vertical that many have forgotten, yet it still generates income for those working with it. While handling most offers can be challenging, this is offset by low competition, the ability to use various traffic sources, and simple sales funnels.
